  • Plenty of decent games on Android, but the experience of platforms like Google Play, Itchio and Humble Bundle is abysmal. Google Play pushes this slopfest iirc since Android 2 at least. Itchio has too much noise and too little browsing filters. Humble Bundle you'd be lucky to find a game with a notice that is too old and likely won't work on modern devices, the rest being kinda just there, forgotten.

For me at least, the best you can get out of a phone is emulation and source ports. But without a dedicated controller, experience can be rather cumbersome while playing too. In fact, a small tangent to show the point, the ebook reader I most prefer is a PS Vita homebrew simply because it is made to use physical controllers and works fantastic at that while not having to have the fingers cover parts of the page, even if the reader itself may take literal seconds to load the next page.

But besides that, I also miss the novelty of a portable console, or even from any consoles before they became somewhat standardized glorified boxes. The absolute unit that is the Saturn, the (truly) slim PS2 and the PSP whose loudness helps greatly at troubleshooting while their libraries do the most for their hardwares' quirkiness, the DS, 3DS and Wii having multiple screens for reasons, whatever Sony was going for with the PS Vita but that worked out fantastic (plus it was still relatively small)...

Meanwhile, the Switch and NS2 are rather basic, clinging to brand name, some exclusives, and barely having competition. But things like positioning them on a degree to play I can do with any no-brand screen, general library there are those portable Linux devices and stretching a bit the Raspberry Pi, and so on, and tinkering with these devices, not being as standard, brings some of the novelty back.

Besides, back at the initial point, I've seen console-like PCs a bit smaller than a Vita, like the R36S, making for a nice portable and pocketable experience. Though these are from my experience just powerful enough for retrogaming, which would lock you out past a certain point in time. So at least for now, I think those handheld PCs should do as replacement, but I would for sure gaming hardware to go back to that more novel and pocketable way.

  • Oooooooooh

Time for a GameFAQS rabbit hole to find scans of the Japanese covers then. e.e"

  • Makes me think, maybe I'm getting gritty aesthetics of DMC mixed with the nasty aesthetics of the 2013 reboot, being several years since I played either, and because of that it wouldn't sound as off.

  • Context from a thread I found through reverse image search:

It is one of multiple photos taken by a Norwegian athlete in Barcelona in the day a civil war broke out. The athlete was there for a competition being organized in protest to the Olympics being held in the then already Nazi Germany.

    "Retched" in Devil May Cry

  • Reading your article as well as others', what I can tell is that what makes Atom better/less ambigous is that unlike RSS 2.0, it defines each element far more consistently, and even enforces where RSS does not. It only takes one time format, post IDs are mandatory so readers can better tell the posts apart, fields are better scoped, things like relative links (like /index.html instead of example.com/index.html) and different formats as post body (like HTML vs. plain text) are better handled, etc.

So in short, it sounds like someone looked at how RSS handled things and thought "how can I improve it?"

  • If Wafrn has hardcoded search links, maybe follow a tag from Mastodon with RSS, and set links to redirect to your instance's search?

  • When everything's data that could be harvested for who knows what nefarious reasons, I'd rather not risk their "can't read" to be actually "pretend not to be able to", specially coming from Microsoft.

  • (One per message because Mbin doesn't have quick embedding as Lemmy, PieFed or Mastodon)

  • Have two more:

  • Sum of users across the fediverse still seems to be growing too. Slow but surely steady. =)

  • Reminds a bit of Scott Pilgrim maybe? Been some years since I read the comic so I may be misremembering though.

  • It loads for me if I open in a new tab, but not through my instance's link preview.

  • Good idea. And if @goofsqueak@lemdro.id goes for it and is concerned about the physical drive with Windows potentially tempering with the Linux install or reporting back to MS or whomever else whatever it finds, goofsqueak could unplug the Linux drive before plugging the Windows one, so no physical access to the main system is given to Windows.

And to goofsqueak, any problem with Fortnite on the Switch? I don't play games as services so I wouldn't know, and at least from my experience with offline games, if the problem are graphics, Fortnite from the little I know of, I don't think would lose much in terms of quality.

  • Afaik Fortnite blocks access to Linux users due to anticheat? Options that come to mind are running on a VM with Windows, playing on consoles, and playing on a burner computer with Windows installed on bare metal.

  • Added to "Other stores, store-adjacent and catalogue-esque sites":

    • Kickstarter - Go to the posts tab of a project and add .atom at the end so it becomes https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/%7Bauthor%7D/%7Bproject%7D/posts.atom.
  • These tools are as good as the information fed to them, so I'd presume they weren't fed nuanced situations. Now why would that be, I have some theories, either the people building the machine didn't think/remember/find such materials to feed it, or these materials are hard to come by.

Reminds me how, also in Japanese, most dictionaries online I found, and even some people I asked about, couldn't tell the difference between 今日 and 本日. What helped me was having enabled the Japanese-French dictionary setting in a multi-language dictionary I checked despite barely understanding French.

  • I don't know if these numbers can be verified, or if it's a "trust me bro" situation, but in case Reddit's numbers are legitimate, its userbase to be still growing but only 1% could be inertia even as acceleration becomes negative. In an analogy, putting a car in reverse while it's still moving forward can only keep taking it forward so much.

  • To @mangobanana@discuss.online, if you make a community, either the pottery one if you feel like making a second one or any other community, feel free to post about the newly made community to either/both !communitypromo@lemmy.ca and !newcommunities@lemmy.world.

The more people follow a given community, the more it propagates whenever a post is made, and the more it propagates, the higher is the chance of someone feeling like interacting with the community or even following. And making the post to either/both communities helps giving an initial boost, though persistence in keeping posting until it gains traction should still be needed.

  • Starbound maybe?

Might not match the hardware and controller requirements since its optimization changes depending on the machine, and the commands are keyboard and mouse-centric so adapting to a 24-keys controller can be hard.
