  • Regarding the dark energy debate/question, has anyone factored for the output of the stars themselves?

  • I didn't realize how significant the issue is, at most I was thinking maybe just barely double but not significantly beyond it.

    On it being in the "empty" space or void between galaxies, could it be some of quirk of gravity? What I mean is that the absence of sufficient mass would lead to these voids "expanding". Using the typical example of a stretched elastic sheet, the demonstration is to show how mass pulls space in upon itself. Except this would be the inverse with the mass collecting on the border of the void, causing it to be stretched apart instead.

    Any chance you could recommend reading material on this?

  • Another factor is that politicians aren't in the positions they have attained through entirely altruistic means. From my observations, when people achieve some larger amount of means, they trend towards being conservative to varying degrees of their accumulated wealth and status.

    A measurable amount of the older generation don't want to give up anything, perhaps even being aware they have much more then they actually need. Or perhaps not, I don't know. A more socialist government means giving up portions of their wealth for things that have no benefit to them (eg schools for children) and or they assume it is all just a ruse to cheat them? Again, I don't know.

  • From my experience, the number one culprit of legacy code breaking is someone asking if anyone knows how it works. Second most common culprit is someone making a "quick patch" to legacy code.

  • Adjacent comment. I've found working in a true posix environment is drastically better than the oddities I dealt with Win32. One annoyance is Microsoft has never been able to implement fork().

    Though i never messed with x11 as I was never motivated to see what it was like under the figurative hood.

  • Also as a life long programmer, I have this feeling it is possible to just go in and make some changes so I can have the system just make shit up about the TPM while indeed also doing the equivalent of having system-d decide to respond with random bullshit.

    Don't even need to be a programmer, just find a community of them that you trust that distribute their own "fixes".

    Definitely not doing that with anything else because its both hidden in compilation and buried like herpes across multiple components. Probably/hopefully not directly related but I really want to know what they changed to break the clipboard service.

    USA citizens are completely clueless to how fucked things are with all the systems that have kept them safe. Normally I would argue against inflammatory titles but more needs to be framed as "(DOGE or Trump) stopped monitoring..." versus hiding it behind the various TLA's

  • I framed the "AI" craze as parallel to self checkout kiosks. They were sold as the future and a way of getting rid of those pesky human workers. Reality is they're an open wound on the company. Unfortunately it will cost more money to get rid of them so they're still there.

    That's the difference with AI currently. Cancel your subscription, toggle it to off in your IDE, and its gone. I believe this is why they're trying to push "AI" everywhere, hoping it will stick somewhere.

    Otherwise I liked a well manged agile development process. Heck of a lot less stressful than water fall.

  • It's kinda insane to frame OpenAI as remotely equal to Apple with "two of the world's biggest tech companies".

    Apple has multiple profitable revenue streams, hundreds of physical stores, that giant donut super villain headquarters, they basically own multiple factory towns in Asia, and on top of it they have an ocean of capital hidden somewhere for a "rainy century" scenario. I think their only consistent loss leader is AppleTv, right?

    OpenAI's business is generating something embarrassing like $100 for every $1000 spent (just random exaggerated numbers as sarcasm).

    This outrageously dishonest narrative is being pushed constantly everywhere and I am more than just sick of it.

  • I've met Mr Carmack a few times along with religiously reading his dev journal in the 90's. Never got to know him personally but always seemed like an alright person. I am biased as I directly attribute QuakeC and the Quake mod scene for accelerating my career in programming.

  • Some gaming consumers are just easily directed cattle for rage stampedes about whatever. No time for comprehension, just get the pitch forks and go burn some shit down!

    Similar theme but different story was that guy who distributes a VR "mod" for various games, including Cyberpunk 2077. The nuanced part is a big chunk of it is in proprietary libraries that are independent of the games it provides VR support for. Just look at what PrayDog had to do to get VR support for just Unreal games https://github.com/praydog/UEVR/tree/master and that other guy has made a toolset that works with multiple engines. Charging at most a one time patreon fee for an unlocked copy doesn't sound that greedy.

    Another one was the more muted whining that Valheim's Iron Gate has cheated everyone by doing "the bare minimum" to be Early Access and are abandoning an unfinished game with Valheim's 1.0 release. Personally I think those people are fucking insane.

    Forty years ago I was at a cross roads that would have led to me being a programmer in the gaming industry. Really glad I didn't choose that as the game industry culture is absolutely exhausting.

  • Adjacent comment: Using the electrician analogy, AI is like one of those really cool gadgets you see on Temu that don't actually do half of what they claim and will probably burn the building down.
