  • Some information from SC Tools Wiki:

Claire Buffet was Vice-President, Operations (North America) at Turbulent / Cloud Imperium Games.[1]

She Joined Turbulent in March 2008 as Associate Producer, became a Partner in January 2013, Vice President Strategy & Creation in November 2019, Studio manager in July 2023 and Vice President of Operations (Canada) in July 2024.[1] She became Vice President of Operations for North America in August 2025.[2]

    https://starcitizen.tools/Claire_Buffet

Mike Jones was Vice President of Corporate & Publishing Technology at Cloud Imperium Games.[1]

    Works at CIG

He always enjoyed MMOs but what really brought him to CIG was a video of Chris Roberts at the first CitizenCon introducing his team and talking about what they were doing, which blew Mike away, how it can be so transparent and so different from everything he had learned in his career so far, but the livestream started cutting out as they were having bandwith problems. Two days later John Erskine called Mike which started his work at CIG[1]

His responsabilities cover the hardware, networking and the infrastucture side of things.[1][2]

All his previous work felt like it was on rails, whereas at CIG he can do something nobody else would try, where he needs to solve problems other companies don't have, this creativity is candyland to him.[1]

    Other Works

He played video games, but it never occurred to him what it takes to make a game. He got an opportunity to tour the legendary video game developer Sierra Online and at the end of the tour he was blown away by how cool this was. He was told they had openings for customer service and quality assurance, so he asked which one pays better, was told customer service starts out better but is hard, and Mike asked "how do i get your job?" to was told that to get into a leadership position he needed to start in QA, so he did.[1]

He ran QA teams and found that he had a talent and interest in technology so he kept focusing on that and learning as much as he could.[1]

    Quotes

"For the most part, our systems are all custom designed specifically for our needs, and the reason for that of course is, this is a very unique game, and we have very unique needs." -Mike Jones[2]

    Trivia

    • The first infrastructure at CIG were two tower servers in a Harry Potter style under the staircase closet that also served as John's office, with a black contractor tarp over the top of the servers to protect them, but not John, from any leaks from the above sewer pipes. He was instrumental in moving to the new offices including using his own truck.[1]

  • I had a similar issue on CachyOS. The launcher would crash a few seconds, or even a minute or two after starting the game download.

Updating my Wine Runner to v11.12-1 fixed it for me.

Run the LUG helper script -> Manage Wine Runners -> Install a runner from LUG Wine -> select a newer version.

I also heard there were some issues with v11.13, so I'm sticking with v11.12 for now.

  • If you're worried about credibility, the founder is Louis Rossman who's famous for the right to repair movement.

Here's a quick 2 minute video of him explaining the Fulu Foundation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNkIBece8oc

TL/DW: The bounty winners have to prove that their solution works, but they are not required to release the code to the public because, in the U.S., they can be put in prison for 3-5 years for releasing that code publicly.

The point of all this is to be able to demonstrate to legislators that the DMCA needs to be fixed. They are lobbying to protect our digital rights.

  • transfer them over to the internal drive, and they work. Even without internet.

That might work for some games, but there's an increasing number of games requiring you to establish some sort of connection to the internet even for single player or mostly single player games (Lego Horizon for instance).

Try to transfer one of those and load it up on a new console without an internet connection.

Sure, your "home console" might work for some games for now. But in 10-15 years when Sony is trying to sell you the PS8, they're going to be cutting off service to the PS5. What happens when you have to take that device in for maintenance and they need to do a factory reset? You need to log in again to activate it, except now it's a brick that might only be able to play a few games on physical media. Anything downloaded/backed up would likely require that specific account.

  • Definitely depends on the game. For something like StarCitizen, there's a small bar at the bottom when shaders are compiling for letting you know the status. There is a noticeable improvement in game performance once the shaders have completed compiling.

  • It's going to depend on the instance and what software they're running to connect to the fediverse.

For PieFed instances, visit the homepage for the instance itself, scroll all the way to the bottom and click on the "About" page. There's usually some contact info for the admins there.

For Lemmy instances, visit their homepage, scroll to the bottom and click on "Legal". There's usually contact info for the admins there.

For Mbin/Kbin instances, click on the menu, then scroll down to the "contact" link.

Sometimes instances won't let you view information without a local account. Usually, in those cases, you can try to "register for an account" but then look for any sort of "privacy" or "terms of service" links which should have contact information for the instance admins.

  • The condition doesn't appear in some countries, but that doesn't mean that they won't eventually expand it:

Notably, the clause is conspicuously absent from terms governing Mexico, the United States, and several other regions, meaning players there are not currently subject to the policy. By contrast, the provision has been enforceable in the United Kingdom and various European countries for years, though it largely escaped public notice until the recent physical-format debate brought renewed scrutiny to Sony’s digital practices.

  • I would love to see a little more support for cross-posting. So far I can work around this a bit by using a 3rd party app which results in a cross-post like this: https://piefed.social/c/starcitizen@lemmy.world/p/2187210/pegasus-class-escort-carrier

But it would be great to be able to cross-post natively. There's a decent amount of content that we can pull in to communities to help bolster activity.

I do like the way you've handled the integration where the title is blank. I think it's better than the mbin/kbin method where the title is a duplication of the entire post.

  • I'm in the same boat, I've played all of the older GTAs, but I never played GTA5. I even got the game for free from Epic... Maybe I'll try it out eventually.

I'm not very interested in buying GTA6, but I'll probably check out some gameplay/highlight videos to see if there's any new/interesting tech in it.

  • The article never mentioned LLMs. LLMs only make up a small part of all AI tools. The AI in this sense is referring to machine learning models used to help digitally unroll the scroll and then another machine learning model that's used to detect the letters.

  • Looks like an interesting article, but this feels more like "News" material, rather than "Technology" material.

  • As far as where theyve chosen to post instead (from the article):

Starting July 6, City of Waterloo announcements will be communicated on municipal websites and other social media already used by city hall such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube and Vimeo.

City hall will maintain an X account but only to direct people elsewhere, Abbott said.

    [...]

The city does not plan at this time to communicate on alternate platforms that have been established as alternatives to X.

  • AI is the larger umbrella term. LLMs, Machine Learning, CNNs, DNNs, RNNs, etc. all fall under that umbrella "AI" term.

  • Thanks! Fixed.
