  • Well I have no problem stuffing my face. If I had a robot chef there would be no problem at all. But anticipating my future motivation to prepare the food is where it gets dicey.

  • I recently found out about a local non-profit which collects scrap unused building material. Then it gets stored until someone needs it. You can’t just be a taker though.. they keep track of who gives what so if you give something you then have an allowance to take stuff. It’s a kind of bartering. It works around the hard-ass repair/hobbyist-hostile municipalities like yours.

  • According ro research inspired by one of the scientists kids, nutrients and vitamins rise when exposed to sunlight, and deteriorate when in a dark fridge.

I appreciate the link but I didn’t quite catch the nutrition analysis. They did not seem to state outright that nutrients rise, though they say the daylit food has more anti-carcinogens. Are you infering that the tissue loss implies a loss of nutrition?

There was a finding in research a couple decades ago on mushrooms, which accumulate vitamin E or D under sunlight. I forgot which but it the same vitamin we directly get from sun exposure.

But then we must work out how to exploit this knowledge. Mushrooms need to be refrigerated. Should they be in a fridge with a glass door? Or does the glass block most of the UV which is likely the key ingredient anyway? I keep them in a dark fridge but if insects are not around I will take them out of the fridge in the morning so they get sunlight in their final day.

Potatoes need to be kept in darkness to slow sprouting. But I wonder if I should treat them like mushrooms and give them a final day or two of light.

  • Smart shopping

Not exactly sure what this implies. I buy edgy food which was slow to move off the shelf so the price gets cut down in order to make it move. It’s cheap¹ and mitigates food waste outside my house. If by smart shopping you mean to buy the freshest food, well then that would prioritise nutrition over rescuing local food from waste. Which is smart is not obvious to me.

My kitchen becomes like a ER triage to eat food before it spoils. And sometimes I have to do surgery and make sculptures. That is, carving decayed parts out of partially ruined food. It’s food in its least nutritional state, but there is still something to be said for training your immune system.

Ex. I eat leftovers from last night’s dinner for lunch the next day.

Leftovers the next day risks giving you more of the same nutrition you still have traversing your body from the previous meal. So I deliberately skip a day or two on leftovers to ensure the nutrients are replenished when they are needed more (which is after they left the system). Leftovers are also less urgent because the cooking kills the baddies and enables the spoilage clock to be reset.

¹ Since the edgy food is generally ½-off, it’s fair to say I can buy twice as much for the same price. I don’t really know if that more or less than compensates for the age-induced decline of vitamins.

  • Notice there is a “crosspost to” and a “crosspost from”. When users of Alexandrite or Lemmy clients initiate a crosspost, a link to the parent post is auto-generated and dumped in the body of the text tagged as “crosspost from”. We can edit that, and sometimes I do. AFAIK, there is no way to form that link to refer to the copy on the reader’s instance. The best we can do on that is to add the !<community>@<node> reference to the community, along with a title to search for.

The “crosspost to” line is not supplied or controlled by the author. It must be added by the reader’s server. In your case, lemmy.zip editorializes by adding that line when possible. The lemmy.ca and sh.itjust.works examples show that the url points to locally hosted posts. Only lemmy.ca can know about the lemmy.ca link. Lemmy servers are not sophisticated enough to find matching posts based on the body, and the title would not be reliable. So I believe the “crosspost to” line is only generated when a post makes use of the URL field. Since I referenced no URL in my post, there was nothing to compare for generating a “crosspost to” line.

  • I can’t reach your example link because lemmy.zip is a tor-hostile node in Cloudflare’s walled-garden. So I am blocked. But what you’re saying suggests you may be experiencing a feature of the server. Sometimes I post a thread that uses the URL field, and the URL I am sharing was already shared by someone else earlier (often unwitting to me). In that case, some clients (or servers) automatically see that multiple threads reference the same URL. In that case, the list of all threads referencing the same URL is presented but it has nothing to do with anything the author posted in the msg body. I wonder if that’s what you are seeing.

  • i’d say throwing away edible food is being overly cautious.

That’s not really what’s happening. People who eat the freshest food first don’t toss edible food. They still wait until it’s rotten before tossing. It’s just that when you eat the freshest food first, more food ends up reaching the spoiled state.

editing to add: happy cake day, activistPnk!

I’m afraid it’s a fake cake day to throw off the doxxers (who now know that I was born on one of the other 364 days).

  • I have multiple Lemmy accounts on different instances, some of which default to the stock Lemmy client. The accounts that use the stock Lemmy client create the same kind of links to parents of crossposts as Alexandrite. From there, I’m not even aware of a way to link to a post or comment in a generic or indirect way that can be done without knowing the host of the reader who will visit it. I’ve only noticed that links to communties can have a host-neutral syntax. Perhaps the nodes I use that run stock clients are out of date. The latest version I’ve checked this on is 0.19.20.

Worth noting that the smarter behaviour you have experienced may not be related to the OP’s client, but rather your own server or client, and perhaps the software on your side of this does not recognise !zerowaste@slrpnk.net as a subscribed community by which there exists a local copy of posts to replace the link with.

  • I use the default client for slrpnk.net, which is Alexandrite (which is not the stock Lemmy client).

  • That’s some nice scrap wood. My region is so overloaded with Ikea melamine particle board garbage that I only keep two pieces around. On any spontaneous day that I need wood, I can cycle around the neighborhood and find a pile of Ikea discards. Every minute of every day, there is something.

Solid wood would be worth saving but it’s much more scarcely dumped on curbs than Ikea wood.

All scanners have an unscannable area -- or are there exceptions?

  • I use the singlefile extension all the time, but I would not use it for this. Saving a page takes 5-10 seconds. Finding all threads for which I participated would probably take ~2 seconds per thread, and many would be repeated because a profile timeline would have many going to the same thread (once per post), and they would be in the sequence posted not ordered by thread. Same problem for the notifications timeline. I believe it would take ~4 hours of painful manual labor for every 1000 threads. Not how I want to spend my time.

Then note as well a shit ton of html files is not really usable. It could not easily be parsed and reposted using another account.

  • Thanks for the feedback.. that’s good news considering I recently bought a 2nd-hand NAS that’s 32bit.

  • Oof.. well, hopefully that was just a bad example. Hopefully a FOSS SQL server exists with the same capability.

  • Interesting that Lemmy server has no disk access (that in effect, it just uses inter-process communication). Apparently it is possible to query a DB for the available remaining space for wherever that DB lives.

So IMO it is still a Lemmy issue. In the event that Postgres cannot handle the query (which I have not checked), it is still a Lemmy issue because Lemmy should not choose a DB that cannot provide storage info.

  • That’s not an obstacle. It’s a matter of where to draw the line for switching to read-only mode. A good design would obviously switch to read-only (w.r.t. user ops) when there is still plenty of space for logs.

  • The good thing about the fediverse is if you don’t like that your admin decided to keep the downvote option you can always move the community to somewhere that does hide the downvote option.

No you do not have that permission. Only local users can form a community on a particular node. What you suggest is a hack as a workaround to flawed software, which only works to the extent that there exists both a node that accepts new users and for which the community topic is aligned with the node’s purpose/constitution.

There are very few public nodes that disable downvotes. We are talking single digits (like <10 nodes fedi-wide). Considering all the other factors in node selection, there could be no options for various given situations.

Also doesn’t it only effect local users? Someone from another instance can still downvote it.

Yes. That’s a good point. Though I wouldn’t say this justifies the limitation.

It would also be possible for a client app to be coded to default to showing down votes based on the settings of the native community settings.

  • Cloudflare is where they are hosting, correct?

CF is not a hosting provider. Wherever the website is hosted, Cloudflare masks that from us, which is another separate problem because we don’t even have enough transparency to know who else is in the loop. If an admin chooses CF as a proxy, then from that decision you can expect them to have no hesitation about licking the boots of Amazon, MS, or Google for hosting service.

CF is a man-in-the-middle who intercepts all traffic. They hold the keys, thus creating a deception with browser padlocks. The browser shows you a padlock which implies that you have a secure tunnel, but in fact the tunnel terminates at Cloudflare where all traffic is seen in the clear. From there, you have no way of knowing if the traffic is fully exposed between Cloudflare and the host.

Maybe I’m misunderstanding the issue here, but wouldn’t any Lemmy instance with any amount of scale necessarily be centralized to some degree? If not Cloudflare, than some other provider would be the point of contention.

Scale is the wrong goal. It’s antithetical to decentralisation. Cloudflare brings the most muscle to the table, and enables an instance to grow disproportionately and out of control. A non-CF node gives some measure of confidence that an instance is not planning to get greedy with accummulating power through disproportionate scale.

I don’t want to let perfect be the enemy of good,

This is not that sort of scenario. There is neither “good” nor “perfect” with Cloudflare. Just enshitification and harm to netneutrality.

so I’m willing to accept some negatives.

For what? It’s a stupid trade. You elevate tyranny and corporate oppression for what? You cannot even claim to have good uptime (the theoretical selling point of CF) because of how often Cloudflare falls over. Even if Cloudflare would one day eventually sort out its availability issues, it will still be a foolish trade-off.

I think the more important factor is if the instance aligns with my values

Well if using technofeudal bullying fiefdoms like CF aligns with your values, you may be in the right place. For me, if a fedi instance is inside Cloudflare’s walled-garden, I instantly know without further checking that the admins are out of alignment with my values and decentralization principles. It’s a time-saver when short listing prospective nodes to register on. It also helps me shortlist where to post.
