I am a human man. I like to do human man things. The activities I participate in most frequently are sleeping and eating. Unfortunately this inevitably also leads to pooping, but we all do what we must, right?

What else can I write about??..... I love gaming. I also love my family, but slightly less than gaming. Oh, also memes, love memes; these would probably come in second place actually.

  • Yup. Retroid Pocket 6 is perfect for this. Can even run PC games with Steam save game sync. Plays all Switch emulated games.

    But this is not for normies. The amount of setup and fiddling these consoles take make them a very very niche enthusiast device. But still a device I would strongly recommend for people who are willing and who want a budget device in this current hardware climate.

  • Joplin self hosting seemed like a pain and it works perfectly well synchronising via WebDAV. I'd be interested in hearing how you get on.

    I've been using Actual Budget for a couple of years and only recently started getting into slightly more functions than basic expenses recording. It's really good to be able to have it do more as needed.

  • I host Tiny Tiny RSS.

    • my list of subscriptions and categorisations are centralised so I don't have to set this up on any other device. I can access this on my phone, tablet and PC.
    • it synchronises read/unread stories across devices so I don't have to keep sifting through the same articles I've seen.
    • I've got a long list of blacklisted words. I don't want to hear about sports news, celebrity gossip, USA-centric news, "he said/she said" bullshit from social media that mainstream news seems to love to report, etc. Now I can set up my blacklist in one place centrally.
    • there are a lot of great apps that will access the server RSS feed. I'm never actually going to to TTRSS browser page.

    The point isn't to download content to the server at all. It's to keep the centralised list. I host opodsync (Gpodder podcast server) for the same reason.

  • 😆 I wouldn't describe myself as someone with fine taste. But I do like experimenting with things I use every day to find what I like best. This goes for hot drinks, brands of peanut butter, ink pen, mechanical keyboard, etc. If I'm going to interact with something every day then might as well be the best experience I can get (without breaking the bank).

    Caffiene isn't so bad. Sleep disruption is about the worst of does to you, unless you drink crazy amounts. Unfortunately coffee shop culture isn't great in the UK. Europe does this much better with nice little cafes. Cafes here aren't the chill third spaces as they are in Europe. And I'm not going to spend £5 on a coffee. Certainly not going to pay money for a tea (they throw a teabag in warm water and charge money for this). I would rather have people come to my house and have a drink, but people don't have the time or inclination for that these days it seems.

  • Thats higher numbers than I thought there would be in all the countries mentioned. I guess the question asks if people are happy with capitalism in its current state. That must include a whole bunch of people who think their country needs even more capitalism.

  • I'm not a coffee snob. I just want my coffee to be quick and simple. Instant coffee can make do. I take it with milk and a sweetener. These days I'm making Colombian Rave coffee via Aeropress.

    Coffee drinking is a very recent thing for me. It used to be Yorkshire tea with milk and sweetener. Still happy to have this as well.

  • Read/listen to/watch philosophy content. People wiser than us over the centuries have spent their lifetimes thinking about these questions. There's no single answer, but there are ways of thinking through this and coming to a place mentally that you can be happy with.

    Personally I find Albert Camus's flavour of absurdism to be the best way I find things to make sense. The universe is irrational and meaningless, and that's great news. We carry on in a meaningless world and make our own meaning.

    Even just watching TV shows and movies helps, as long as you're paying attention to the story of the charachters, the messages and the experiences/motives of the characters. Seeing the stories of others (even if fictional) helps put your own situation in perspective.

  • Well you've done the hard part and managed to find Lemmy, make an account and post something. Doing great so far.

    This is nationally a reddit replacement and works similarly. It does have less content and is more fragmented (search for memes communities and see how many ones there are across instances), but it's a good experience and has helped me stop using reddit completely. I would recommend browsing by "all".

    Finding a good app or frontend helps improve the experience. I use Boost on Android and Alexandrite on desktop.

  • I've only managed to make it work a handful of times.

    There needs to be a connection to something IRL from the online community. Maybe you like the same music, hobby or even playing games (that might be online but it is a "doing" action in person). It should also be something positive. You aren't going to make healthy connections from "anti-something" communities.

    Communities like Lemmy/Reddit are particularly bad for this since they're predicated on anonymous sharing and not really keeping you in touch with a group of repeat contacts.

    You must have enough free time to end up online and shoot the shit in a direct conversation. Maybe an online chat or voice chat or Discord or something. You can't really make friends easily with asynchronous contact.

    I saw a comment about friendship long ago and I have never been able to find it again. It said something like: to be friends you must share at least two things out of this list: stage in life, physical proximity, common interest, shared predicament (e.g. job).... There were a couple of other factors I can't remember, but the more I think about it this seems to hold true.

    Eventually the connection you make needs to be bigger than how you meet. If you meet while playing DotA, and then you stop playing DotA, is there still any glue that holds you together that would push you to keeping connected through a different medium?

    I've tried to make efforts to make friends a few times online. It has never worked from trying. People on Lemmy even express interest in a social chat group and I made one. No one ever joined. Well, one person did but lost interest in a couple of days. Good luck in your endevours. Share tips if you succeed.

  • Depends on how harmful their activism and projects are. Frankly there are people with all sorts of opinions. Just being religious and having a different opinion doesn't make me want to boycott or cancel anybody. Most people in my family have vastly different opinions to mine but I still love them. Depends on the harm being caused. Doesn't mean principles are being compromised.

  • It's not unusual that a rule might stand against the spirit in which it was originally made. Happens all the time actually. It just needs someone sensible to step in and say "implementation like this would be against the spirit of the game and the rule". Although then next time some all male team will object and say that the rule should be bent for them as well, and then turn it into some sort of discrimination court case. Then those who bent the rules are pushed forward by the organisation to justify their own actions and the organisation falls back on saying "that wasn't according to our rules".

    People in these comments are clearly annoyed.... But if you ever end up in a position of making and enforcing rules you'll realise that bullshit like this happens all the time and even if you try to do the right thing then it can blow up in your face. Even if they change the original rule, what is it supposed to say? "All woman teams can be allowed, but no all male teams will be allowed"?
