  • Glad to see Old Man up there in the furry corner. It was my biggest project out of all the canvas events so far. I love how the surrounding art coexists with it, especially the flower at the top of the hat.

  • The quality of life improvements for the canvas UI over the years made the experience for this year's canvas event incredible! I virtually had no complaints for the core features save for the buggy pixel cooldown timer, which was fixed later on. The best feature about this year was the addition of cursors, which really brought the canvas to life, plus it helped strangers coordinate with the pixel placements and also communicate with each other through gestures.

    Here are my suggestions for improvements for the next year's canvas event:

    1. Make the template feature more intuitive: The current UI for adding templates through the URL was not obvious initially. Ideally the cotemplate feature should be integrated with the canvas UI instead of being in a separate webpage. If not possible, then at least add an option to display a short guide on using templates.
    2. Allow non-team members to access other teams' templates: It was difficult assisting other users with their art since I didn't have access to their template (or I didn't know that I did). Even if I'm not in a team, I should at least have a read-only access to use other teams' templates on my own. It's only after the event finished that I got to know that I could've used other teams' templates after all, even though I did spent considerable time in the website trying to figure out how. I guess this should be clubbed under 1.
    3. Add coordination-centric reactions for cursors: The cursor reactions feature could be extended so you could communicate with other users directly with your cursor for coordination without actually having to text others. You could add emojis like thumbs up, thumbs down etc, tool icons like pencil, erase, fill etc, and even directional symbols like arrows pointing vertically, horizontally, diagonally etc.
    4. Add option to only place pixels on left mouse click: It was only later in the event that I realised that I was placing pixels even while right-clicking which I had reserved for moving through the canvas, wasting pixels in the process and possibly littering other users' art. It would be better to have control over how pixel placement has to be triggered.

  • This is solely to keep the premise of the simple and clear. The device only has one objective: to create a copy of itself. The problem only concerns itself with whether it is theoretically even possible to construct such a device.

If it can be updated in real time, you can experiment with basically infinite scenarios on starting or continuing a conversation with someone to determine what's the best dialogue option to proceed with.

  • As someone who also has played Outer Wilds (up to first half of the DLC), even I was left saddened when I learned the fate of the Escape Pod 3 crew. Back then I was in rush to find their spaceship so I didn't pay that much attention to their scene, but looking back at it now hurts me way more. At least I feel good about the Nomai in the solar system having accomplished something to get themselves as well as future civilisations closer to the secret behind the Eye of the Universe that they'd take pride in before meeting their eventual demise. In fact I believe they would've accounted for the possibility of their species getting wiped out before the completion of their goal one way or another. That or they just do universally good documentation.

    The Nomad implied to be working inside the Ash Twin project at the time the ghost matter flooded the solar system, who must have heard the sudden silence from his friends and then warped out to investigate, only to die within a few steps.

    Oh shit. I never realised it even though I remember the corpse near the warp station. I guess this answers my lingering doubt about what happened to the Nomai supposedly inside the impenetrable core of the Ash Twin Project during the Interloper incident.

    Personally I didn't get the ending. I was constantly switching between the two hypotheses about the meaning of the ending ie.

    1. Having some deep cryptic message that I was too dumb to solve, and
    2. Literally the end of the universe

    Both hypotheses were dissatisfactory, so I just formed my own headcanon that the story ended on the protagonist's arrival at the Eye. Still, the part with the instruments of all the explorers combining into an orchestral harmony was mesmerising, especially with the piano tune from the Quasi-Nomai.

    I believe there was a miscommunication from my side. The performance degradation is enough to make the gaming experience laggy and slow, but does not make the game virtually unplayable.

    I don't think this should be the fault of drivers. If that were the case, I would have noticed a similar degradation other parts of my OS, which I have not observed in any degree.

    I reckon this is the fault of the other inbuilt wine executable proton-cachyos I was using earlier before switching to wine-cachyos.

    In either case, this situation doesn't matter since after I switched to wine-cachyos, the games suffering from the degradation went back to being smooth and responsive as before. It could only mean that the issue is purely software-oriented.

  • I haven't since then. I only did back in May just as a precautionary measure against the multitude of Linux vulnerabilities and exploits being announced that month, else I wouldn't have bothered.

  • It's a recent budget-tier model made for gaming. It may struggle to play AAA games but works exceptionally well for the handful of games I regularly play. Gameplay wise the experience in CachyOS is virtually same as when I used Windows before. The rest of the OS feels snappy and responsive throughout so I don't have any complaints with that.

  • I think of it as 7/10. The pacing of the episode was alright and did not make me impatient to get to the end; in fact, I'd argue it should've been longer to elaborate on Caine's perspective in the second half of the story. I believe the ending could've been better but it's still a good compromise the way it finished on a positive note.

    My biggest concern is how the revival of Caine made the impact of his death in the last episode meaningless.
