  • There are levels to this. For sure, if we could automatically block instances with open signups and no manual verification, the worst of the worst would be eliminated and we could start with that. In fact I believe the author has a project of creating a larger-scale network of instances more or less like that, called Pangea.

    The nice thing is that however strict you want to be, there's a chance the same tools will be needed anyway, up to you to configure, and this is what Pelago does. No matter what you do with it, it becomes more useful to everyone and I like that. Doing what you're proposing helps those with stricter rules and vice versa !

  • I see your point and I think I agree. Maybe I'm willing to let it pass because I happen to agree with the decision (and would also agree with the hypothetical ban of Rails). Ultimately, it comes down to what you said: whatever you use, you should see how to become a full member

  • I still don't see the problem with Codeberg's decision. Of course they will kick projects that they don't want, just like github will kick projects they don't want. The issue isn't what is and isn't allowed, it's who allows it, as it always has been.

    Of course selfhosting is one way to control it, but in Codeberg there is a process to be part of that governance, which the author didn't partake in. At which point there is nothing more to discuss, get in the governance first and then you can write a blog post about how the governance is bad, isn't aligned with you or whatever.

    It's 2026. Who still expects things to be perfect with a third-party without participating ? Be part of the governance, selfhosted or not, always

    I don't have to go through artificial slowness, walls of ads, cookie/"please sign-in" gateways. My data remains mine. The thing does what it does, it just works. Using commercial stuff is actively aggressive towards me and requires my constant vigilance to get through; the fediverse just works for me

    It runs everywhere, is just a single file you double-click to open and browse from your browser. Makdown files are automatically rendered. You can upload a bunch of files directly, or just send them by mail and put them in a directory served by copyparty

    The web is one of its spiritual successor and is plenty usable to share text files. Most if not all software can generate indexes of content in a directory. wget and friends can be used to retrieve the whole archive. If you generate html files you can then style them independently of the content.

  • Most of the usage of platform is individual-based and it's a problem. Collective-based interaction, like in the threadiverse, leads to a better sense of community, better organizing, better software that really helps us, etc...

    I would like to see more wiki-like usage, where we congregate around topics/subjects/interests and collectively build something with rules we decide ourselves

  • ya un truc assez intéressant avec la clim en France, qui culturellement est vu comme une hérésie alors que le chauffage c'est totalement accepté.     • Si, un algorithme est contrôlable. Parce qu'un état fait ce qu'il veut, si l'entreprise ne veut pas obéir elle peut être interdite d'opérer. Si elle continue d'opérer mais ne veut pas elle peut être revendue à une entité nationale, voire nationalisée. Un état fait ce qu'il veut.
    • Ce qu'il va se passer c'est que les moins de 16 ans auront des bâtons dans les roues. L'influence ne sera pas du tout changée, puisque les adultes auront autant accès à ces plateformes. Sauf que ce sont ces gens-là qui votent, qui parlent à la télé, qui prennent des décisions, qui décident de partir à la guerre

    Il n'y a absolument rien dans ces lois qui va changer quoi que ce soit. Meta et autres vont avoir le même business qu'avant. Les adultes ne vont rien changer. Le problème sera mis sous le tapis, comme d'habitude.

  • I think there are 2 levels here: basic federation, where you can follow a channel on another instance and comment there, is opt-out like the rest of the fediverse. In fact you can even comment from Mastodon. The platform-level following is another thing, that enables other uses.

    The issue of search is unrelated to that, it's the same as with other fediverse platforms: search only searches on the current platform. But peertube also allows you to search on global indexes:
